Summary

This controlled laboratory study examined how soil composition influences the ecology and life history of Culex quinquefasciatus, a ground-breeding mosquito species implicated in disease transmission. Without organic matter addition, clay loam soils promoted longer larval survival and accelerated development compared to sandy or silt soils, and increased soil volumes extended survival; however, the addition of organic matter substantially reduced these soil texture effects on larval performance and oviposition preference. The findings suggest soil–water interactions represent a potentially important but understudied factor in ground-breeding mosquito population dynamics and warrant further investigation into the specific abiotic and biotic soil properties driving these effects.

UK applicability

Given that Culex quinquefasciatus is primarily distributed in subtropical and tropical regions and that the study was conducted under laboratory conditions rather than UK field conditions, direct applicability to UK vector control or public health practice is limited. However, the mechanistic insights regarding soil–water–mosquito interactions may inform understanding of other ground-breeding mosquito species present in the United Kingdom and could support research into climate change impacts on vector ecology.
