Summary

This narrative review examines the evidence linking dietary polyphenol consumption to chronic disease prevention. Whilst experimental studies in animals and cell lines suggest protective effects against cardiovascular disease, cancer, neurodegeneration, diabetes, and osteoporosis, clinical translation remains unclear due to dose discrepancies between research and human dietary levels. Epidemiological evidence supports reduced myocardial infarction risk with tea and wine consumption, but associations with cancer risk remain inconclusive; the authors conclude that more rigorous human studies are required to establish clear health protective effects and to evaluate safety at high intakes.
