Summary

This scoping review synthesised 121 publications to map the current evidence landscape for personalised prevention of non-communicable diseases. The authors identified 249 distinct personalised preventive approaches, revealing a substantial concentration of effort in tertiary prevention (46%) and cancer prevention, with growing research interest in personalised primary prevention of cardiovascular disease. The findings underscore an uneven distribution of evidence across prevention levels and disease areas, with implications for priority-setting in personalised prevention policy and practice.

Regional applicability

This global scoping review does not present UK-specific evidence but provides an international map of the personalised prevention landscape that may inform UK health policy and clinical guideline development. The findings on clinical practice directives and cohort study distributions may be useful for NHS strategy on preventive medicine, though the review does not disaggregate findings by health system or country.

Key measures

Number and distribution of personalised preventive approaches by prevention level (primary, secondary, tertiary); source type (cohort studies vs. clinical practice directives); disease focus (cancer, cardiovascular disease); publication year (2017–2023)

Outcomes reported

The review identified 121 publications containing 249 personalised preventive approaches across primary (27%), secondary (27%), and tertiary (46%) prevention levels. It characterised the landscape of personalised prevention evidence for chronic diseases including cardiovascular disease and cancer.
