Tree nuts and the lipid profile: a review of clinical studies

This narrative review synthesises clinical evidence demonstrating that tree nuts, owing to their favourable fatty acid profile and bioactive compounds, consistently reduce LDL cholesterol by 3–19% compared with Western and lower-fat diets. The authors argue that nuts contain beneficial nutrients including plant sterols, fibre and antioxidants that contribute to their lipid-lowering effects, and that inclusion of tree nuts in heart-healthy dietary patterns may produce cholesterol reductions exceeding those of conventional cholesterol-lowering diets used for cardiovascular disease risk reduction.
