Summary
This study evaluated three strawberry cultivars ('Albion', 'Camarosa', 'Camino Real') grown in a hydroponic nutrient film technique system over 87 days, comparing both productivity and antioxidant phytochemical profiles. Whilst cultivar 'Camarosa' produced the highest number of fruits (29.67 per plant) and commercial yield alongside 'Albion', cultivars differed significantly in anthocyanin content, with 'Camino Real' and 'Camarosa' showing substantially higher levels than 'Albion'. The findings suggest that strawberry cultivar selection for hydroponic production can be optimised for both yield and antioxidant compound concentration.
Regional applicability
This Brazilian study provides cultivar performance data for hydroponic strawberry production under subtropical conditions. The findings may be relevant to UK protected horticulture and year-round strawberry production systems, though growing environment, photoperiod and temperature regimes will differ; transferability would require validation in temperate climate conditions.
Key measures
Total phenolics (mg/100 g), antioxidant activity (µmol TROLOX/100 g), total flavonoids (mg/100 g), anthocyanins (mg/100 g), number of marketable fruits per plant, commercial production per plant (g), average mass per fruit (g)
Outcomes reported
The study measured antioxidant activity, phenolic compounds, flavonoids, anthocyanins and fruit productivity across three strawberry cultivars grown hydroponically. Results showed cultivar-dependent variation in anthocyanin content whilst total phenolics and antioxidant activity were not significantly different between cultivars.
