Summary

This controlled feeding trial examined whether substituting dehulled lupin seed meal (Zulika variety) for soybean meal in duck feed could improve the nutritional composition of duck meat. The intervention significantly increased monounsaturated and n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids in both breast and thigh muscle fat, with no effect on n-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids. The findings suggest that lupin-based diets can enhance the dietary value of duck meat for human consumption through a more favourable unsaturated fatty acid profile.

Regional applicability

Lupin cultivation is expanding in the United Kingdom as a protein crop alternative to soya, making these findings directly relevant to UK poultry producers seeking to improve meat nutritional quality whilst sourcing locally adapted feedstuffs. The results support the potential for domestic lupin varieties to be incorporated into UK poultry feed formulations.

Key measures

Monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA); polyunsaturated fatty acids n-3 (PUFA n-3); polyunsaturated fatty acids n-6 (PUFA n-6); fatty acid composition of breast and thigh muscle fat

Outcomes reported

The study measured the effect of replacing soybean meal with dehulled lupin seed meal on the fatty acid profile of breast and thigh muscle fat in Cherry Valley ducks reared to 42 days of age. Key outcomes included monounsaturated fatty acid (MUFA) content, polyunsaturated fatty acid n-3 (PUFA n-3) content, and PUFA n-6 content in muscle tissue.
