Summary

This 2014 experimental study examined how poultry housing type and dietary composition influence the cholesterol and fatty acid profile of eggs, using gas chromatography for lipid analysis. The findings suggest diet was the dominant factor shaping egg lipid composition, whilst housing system effects were marginal. The work contributes evidence for dietary intervention as a lever to modify egg nutritional quality, relevant to consumer-facing nutrient claims and food composition databases.

Regional applicability

Although conducted in Malaysia, the fundamental mechanistic finding—that diet drives egg lipid profiles more than housing—has direct applicability to United Kingdom poultry production systems. UK producers and retailers making nutrition claims about eggs (e.g. omega-3 enriched) could draw on these findings to validate diet-based certification strategies; however, UK feed availability, welfare regulations, and consumer preferences may differ from the Malaysian context studied.

Key measures

Egg cholesterol content; saturated fatty acids (SFA); monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA); polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA); lipid profiles determined by gas chromatography (GC)

Outcomes reported

The study measured egg cholesterol concentration and fatty acid profile (including saturated, monounsaturated, and polyunsaturated fatty acids) under different poultry housing systems and dietary regimens. Housing system had minimal effect; diet emerged as the primary driver of lipid composition variation.
