Money led the farming shows: the rural economy after the Autumn Budget, then winter feeding and silage, and energy costs feeding into food prices.
We heard 96 shows and publications this week, up from 57, and the farming shows were dominated by money: the Autumn Budget, input costs, energy prices and crop margins. On the nutrition side, the conversation leaned towards fermented foods and ‘food as medicine’, much of it from shows with declared advocacy or commercial ties. Soil health and food security, covered in recent weeks, were held back. Topic 10 is a new study on grape pomace silage, and the wildcard is Mexico opening to UK dairy under CPTPP.
Nine topics from the shows, a wildcard, and one from the research
500 topics were weighed this week. Each scores out of 10, four parts added up. A score ranks a shortlist; it is not a verdict on the week’s news.

Kristin King told Don't Eat Poop that around 20% of the global cybersecurity workforce are women, dropping to roughly 7-10% in critical infrastructure cybersecurity. The AG Show separately discussed women in agriculture and forestry as part of its talent-recruitment episode.
Why it matters
Both food cybersecurity and farm labour face talent shortages; wider representation could help close skills gaps in each.
“there's about twenty percent of women in cybersecurity globally. There's like seven percent in maybe seven maybe we might have be closer to ten now in critical infrastructure, cybersecurity”

The news this week
On AHDB's The AG Show, International Trade Development Director Lucy Randolph said the CPTPP agreement has made Mexico tariff-free for UK dairy, with the first cheese shipment recently sent.
Why it matters
A new tariff-free outlet could open fresh demand for UK dairy exporters seeking markets beyond Europe.
“Mexico has come online for us with this cptpp, that's a long word, CPTPP agreement that's happened, which has obviously made it tariff free. In fact, we've just had the first shipment of teas that has gone over to Mexico.”

Topic 10, from the research: Grape pomace silage boosts feed quality
- Livestock and grassland
- new research
What the study found
This experimental study, published in Antioxidants (2026), compared two ruminant silages made from wheat straw, cheese-whey and molasses mixed with either grape pomace or olive mill wastewater. The grape pomace silage came out ahead over 150 days of ensiling, showing higher crude protein, a more favourable fatty-acid profile, more bioactive phenolics and better pH stability.
Why it matters
For livestock farmers, it points to a practical way to turn a grape-processing by-product into a better-quality, functional feed ingredient, though this is a single experimental trial and would need validation in real farm feeding systems before drawing firm conclusions about animal or consumer health outcomes.

Week 44, in five answers
What were farming and nutrition podcasts talking about in Week 44 (22–28 October 2026)?
Money led the farming shows: the rural economy after the Autumn Budget, then winter feeding and silage, and energy costs feeding into food prices. The nine ranked topics were led by rural economy outlook; winter feeding and silage management; and energy costs and food inflation, from 96 sources heard and 500 topics weighed.
What new study did Week 44 cover?
“Bioactive Silages from Agro-Industrial By-Products Based on Grape Pomace or Olive Mill Wastewater for Ruminants: Evolution of Phenolic Profiles, Antioxidant Activity, and Fatty Acid Composition” (Antioxidants, 2026; evidence tier T3).
